Real straight talk

John McCain is aghast at the idea of Republicans might use Barack Obama's race against him. Indeed, to say so is "playing the race card." At Capitol Hill Blue, Doug Thompson reports on John McCain's history of racism, misogyny and homphobia:
John McCain, a member of the House of Representatives in the mid-1980s, often held court at a table near the bar at Bullfeathers, a popular Capitol Hill watering hole, telling jokes and matching hangers-on drink by drink.

As a Capitol Hill chief of staff, I often drank at Bullfeathers and was invited to join the throng at McCain's table one evening. A few minutes listening to the racism, bigotry and homophobia of the Arizona Congressman told me all I needed to know.

McCain loved to tell jokes about lesbians, blacks, Hispanics and the Vietnamese community that occupied a large section of Arlington County, Virginia, just south of the District of Columbia.

Of course, McCain didn't use polite language in the jokes: He used names like "fags" or "queers" or "dykes" or "niggers" or "spics" or "wetbacks" or "gooks."

A typical McCain joke (overheard at Bullfeathers):

Two dykes are talking at a bar and one leaves. As she walks toward the door, the other watches her leave and says out loud: "God, I've love to eat her out."

Two men are standing near by and one turns to the other and says: "I'd like to do the same. Guess that makes me a dyke."
Or another (also overheard at Bullfeathers):

Question: Why does Mexican beer have two "X's" on the label?

Answer: Because wetbacks always need a co-signer.

OH, but it's FINE, because y'see he's from an older generation when being a bigot was totally fine, it was a different time, blah blah blah excuses excuses...

Faugh. All that ever says to me is "thank God I wasn't part of that generation", and "do I really want that generation to be in charge any more" :P It is nice to learn that calling his wife a trollop and cunt wasn't isolated...

I'm not surprised. I mean, McCain has been getting a "pass" by the media for being (1) a POW in Viet Nam no less (2) charismatic (apparently this is true--having never met the man I really couldn't say but apparently many reporters/journalists have noted his "charm"

Really, I think there are things that are untouchable about McCain in terms of trying to criticize him in a public/mass mainstream media way because he's been MORE THAN VOCAL about using the word "gook" and claiming to hate all "gooks" until the day he dies and everyone says, "Oh, that's understandable because he was tortured by the Vietnamese."

Puh-lease! Don't even get me started about anti-Asian racism/prejudice and the ways in which "gook" has been used as a form of racial intimidation/violence in this country. To have a U.S. senator no less sanction his hatred and free use of this word (which he only disavowed in 2000 bowing to political pressure--although does anyone believe he isn't still using it in the privacy of his home and bars among his cronies?) is really to tell everyone that it's OK to use a racial slur against this group of people because they're just a bunch of torturers and evil people.

(she steps off soap box because she realizes that anything to do with John McCain and racism, especially related to his use of the term "gook" makes her a little crazy)

I'd heard about this stuff I think the last time McCain ran. Interesting that it isn't all over the media-- FOX news anyone??

The thing is, all men when they in all male groups, (bars being the favorite male territory where women are degraded and harassed ALL the time) make horrendous comments about women and probably other groups they choose to make fun of. That's the very definition of male in-group thinking -- call women the 'b' word, call lesbians the "d" word, and make fun of women and say they don't have a sense of humor. It's what men do behind closed doors all the time. But this stuff is really over the top with McCain, and he should be held to the fire on these comments. Hope Obama brings this stuff up in the debates, but he probably won't because when women blame the perpetrator it goes against the woman or minority bringing up the accusations.

We all know that game! Get the word out on the Internet!

Here's a good new article from McCain's home turf newspaper:

That one has more disgusting stories and jokes - and more details of what a free pass that jerk gets.

I am so sick and tired of seeing him get a free pass at least partly because of his military service. What is WRONG with Wesley Clark pointing out that military service does not equal foreign policy expertise. My husband was military far longer than McCain (22 years)....should HE be president?
