Old School Friday: "I Need Love" by L.L. Cool J

From Electronic Village:

Ms. Grapevine and MarvalusOne have teamed up to create a weekly meme that we call, Old School Friday. It is our effort to post some music from the last millennium to relive some memories and to educate or just entertain each other.

The theme this week is Music From The Year You Graduated High School. Read more...

1987, baby! As I began college in the fall of that year, this cut by L.L. Cool J. was topping the R&B charts. Now, L.L. and his music were really not my type. (Men who constantly and lasciviously lick their lips give me the willies.) But I remember my little brother had this cassette (Yes, kids, I said cassette. Ask your parents about them.) and played it endlessly. Funny, looking back L.L.'s faux tough and oh-so-sensitive persona was so innocent.

Now, sing with me...When I'm alone in my room, sometimes I stare at the wall...

LL Cool J is a popular OSF choice today! I remember being amazed that a rapper was doing a song with a slow beat. It made me look at LL Cool J with much more respect...

1987- a year that doesn't stand out musically at all for me.

Tami, my kids listened to LL Cool J, and I have come to appreciate the man after seeing his story on MTV or VH1. I don't recall which one at this moment.

I just want to go off topic a bit.

I really like your blog. I try to come here and read your posts (through to the last period) and comment when I can. If I don't comment, it is not because I don't find your posts interesting or thought provoking, it is because I have to put in an appearance (read and leave) even when I don't have the time to comment.

I enjoy coming here because you don't treat your "guests" as uninvited "visitors" no matter what they have to say. You are very gracious, and I thank you for it.

I got hooked on blogs just before the primary season, and I only frequented one blog of color, "Diary of a Content Black Woman" on a daily basis. I like the lady who hosts that blog, also.

My main blog was HuffPo during this past election cycle, but I wanted to find something more. I found your blog and a few others that I still read. On my journey, I found that not all blogs are created equal. Blogs of color are like people of color. We are of every hue. Some I found offensive, and some I found and still find rewarding. Your blog is one of the latter, and I would like to thank you again for being here. Thank you.

Lady C,

Thank you so much! That means a lot--I have a hard time expressing how much. I always hope that I am creating a welcoming space and am putting something of value into the universe, instead of clogging it up with more nonsense. It's good to hear from someone who appreciates what I am doing.

Thank you again.

I never liked LL...like you said, his constant licking of his lips made me...ugh.

But this song is probably one of three of his that I liked.

I will take this opportunity to welcome you to OSF!
