Cosmo's trippin about sports-loving women

written by Monica; crossposted from TransGriot

I began chuckling when I read a commentary about a recent Cosmo article that echoed one I wrote in 2004 about the transgender community.

In that column I skewered members of the transgender community who would echo that same tired meme of 'feminine women aren't sports fans'. It mirrored a December issue of Cosmo in which the so called male guru tried to say that a woman who likes watching sports would be single the rest of her life.

Yo Cosmo, join the rest of us in the 21st century. There are women who like watching sports and not just because their boyfriends or husbands are playing on the team. One of my exes before I transitioned used to win drinks in clubs from guys because they foolishly underestimated the depth of her sports trivia knowledge.

I used to have a CAL coworker named Lucy Schroeder who was a rabid sports fan. We spent break times and dead time on flights we worked together talking about various sports, the Comets and her beloved Dallas Cowboys.

In the interest of full journalistic disclosure, for the record, I can't stand the Irving, oops Arlington Cowchips. When I read this BS I also thought about UK superfan Ashley Judd. She's got floor seats at Rupp Arena to watch her beloved Wildcats.

She's such a devoted University of Kentucky sports fan that when the hockey team made a promotional poster to raise money for the program, it included a picture of her in a UK hockey jersey. When Ashley isn't making a movie and it's college basketball season, you can bet she's watching her beloved Wildcats playing ball and screaming at the SEC refs at the top of her lungs whenever they make a boneheaded call. And like many Texas women, Eva Longoria Parker not only loves football, she was a basketball fan before she met and married some point guard for the San Antonio Spurs.

Holly Robinson Peete not only is a huge NFL football fan, she wrote a book about it to help women understand and enjoy the game. Peeps who teach the courses to supposedly help women understand the game quickly discover that women football fans are far more savvy about it than they are given credit for and ask some sophisticated questions far in excess of their male counterparts.

Don't even get me started about the legions of women who watch NASCAR events, collegiate sports on both the men's and women's sides, NBA and WNBA basketball, are baseball fans, et cetera.

Some of them are not only fashionably attired when they attend games, some even happen to be married.

Don't hate if some of these women know more about sports trivia or in game strategy than some of you red blooded males do.

You know I find it depends on what the sport is. If it is tennis or baseballs we are "allowed" to be passive fans. No one finds it problematic that a woman might listen to the ball game while having a beer on her porch it is the idea that she might actually emotionally invest in the sport with the same passion that we deem customary for a man that is an issue.

This one had me really laughing, because gay men almost always think I like sports. Usual sterotype about lesbians who don't pass as straight. So I have to tell them there are many types of lesbians -- sports lesbians and intellectual lesbian feminist lesbians who are bored to death with malestream sports blasted all over the universe endlessly, tired of men boring us with sports blather, and tired of having to even see all the TVs everywhere tuned to some damn sporting event.

So no, women who like sports are never friends of mine, and men who like sports are also OUT... yeeerrr OUT!

Very much agree, Monica. Certainly seen this first-hand. The missus, for example is a mad Australian-Rules Football and Cricket fan, and can really give me a run for my money in the tipping. Just needed to find the right sports for her. And for that matter, my (female) cousins are probably the most one-eyed and rabid supporters the Eagles have to their name.

Anyone who says women (or even just 'feminine' women) can't get into sports is buying into an enormous line of shite, and really depriving themselves of some great sources of information and comraderie.

I wrote a post about my love about the NBA playoffs, and got a comment about how I was objectifying the men of the sport.

Needless to say, I was upset about it, because in addition to my stating the fact that I am attracted to tall men with long legs and broad shoulders, I also detailed the deeper reason for my love of the game.

It has to do with the passion that each player displays when they are on the court. It is a battle of who wants it more...and watching them wear their passion and competitive nature as an armor is thrilling. It's the game more than anything.

Why must we be put in a box? Why can't we just "be"?
