Slavery--I remember it like yesterday

I've tried to get into Louis C.K.'s stuff, but for some reason I'm just not feeling it. However, after seeing some clips from his recent show in different places, and now this, I may try again. Though what I like about this bit is that it's true, not so much that it is uproariously funny. So...

Anyway, I love this clip from C.K.'s recent appearance on The Tonight Show. (via columnist Ta-Nehisi Coates at The Atlantic) We would all like for slavery to have taken place a long, long time ago, but in the context of social history and the personal history of African Americans it really didn't. Researching my family history has highlighted this for me. I am 41 years old and my grandparents' grandparents were born into slavery, which means they all had access to the stories and experiences of people who had once been chattel. Put that way, it's easy to see how the legacy of slavery could impact a modern family and also why, as one commenter on The Atlantic put it, "it's not history to us; it's real life."
